Required Reading for Freshmen

Soon you’ll be wondering about what to major in. Should you pursue a major that promises career with high earnings? One that offers job security? Follow your parents’ or counseler’s advice?

Nope. None of the above. Don’t do it. Don’t let your professors, parents, or friends; nor the career center counselor choose your major. It’s your life and the decision rests on your shoulder. You’ve got to consider your likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, your personality, motivations, and more. A lot more. It’s a major responsibility to decide how you’re going to launch your career because the decision will have an impact on the direction your entire life will take.

How can you determine what courses and careers will suit you best—and what can you face every Monday morning feeling glad you “get to go to work?” Deciding isn’t a simple task. You’re going to need some tools.

Socrates expressed a wealth of wisdom when he said, “Know thyself.” Universities generally don’t help students get to know themselves in ways that’ll benefit you before you begin pursuing a course of study (that’s OK. It’s not the business they’re in).

So, here are some books that’ll put you on the path to knowing more about your favorite topic: you.  I don’t mean knowing if you’re a good athlete, a good yearbook photographer, or a good debater. I mean getting to know the genuine “inner you.” Your strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes, what you like doing that you can be paid to do. The books I’ve selected will help you begin the journey into knowing and understanding yourself. You may want to read others, too.
